There are millions of people affected by various eye problems & many get blind due to eye diseases like cataract, diabetes, eye infections, glaucoma etc. Many cases of these blindness could have been prevented if they were diagnosed & treated in time.As truly said "EYES ARE WINDOWS TO THE WORLD".
Here at EYES info.com we will attempt to provide eye care information about various eye conditions, eye glasses, eye examination, modern treatment & laser surgery.
  • EYE STRUCTURE:
Eye ball works like a camera to capture the image & transmit that image to the brain where it is interpreted.
Eye ball is divided into two parts, Anterior segment & Posterior segment.

The front segment of the eye works more like a lens system of the camera to focus the rays of light.
The rays are focused at the part of the eye called retina, which covers the inner surface of the posterior segment.Retina acts more like the film of the camera to capture the image.

The eye ball has three layers.

    1.The inner most being Retina.
2.This is covered by the middle layer called Choroid, which provides nutritional support to the retina.
3.This is covered by the fibrous layer that serves to protect the inner two delicate layers. This layer is known as Sclera. This is the layer that is seen as the white part of the eye ball that we see.

In front the sclera meets the transparent round part called Cornea. The cornea reveals the colourful layer called iris, the center of which is black pupil. The colour of the iris gives the colour to the eye ranging from brown, black to grey, blue & brown.

Just behind the iris & pupil is located the lens which along with cornea helps to focus the rays of light on to the retina.

The anterior segment of the eye is filled with the clear fluid called aqueous humor. The posterior segment of the eye is filled with gel called Vitreous humor.

The eyeball is surrounded by muscles that help us to move the eye in different directions.
Eye ball is connected to the brain by the nerve called optic nerve which is located at the posterior pole of the eye.

    SUMMARY OF EYE STRUCTURES:

1.CORNEA: This is the front round clear glass like structure & it serves to let the rays of light pass inside the eye & acts like a conex lens to converge the rays on to the retina.

2.CONJUNCTIVA: This is the thin layer of skin that covers the white part of the eye.

3.SCLERA: This is a white of the eye that we see around the cornea & it protects the inner layers of the eye.

4.LENS: This is a clear structure situated behind the iris & pupil & this also serves like a convex lens to converge the rays on to the retina. Any cloudiness of this lens results in cataract development.

5.IRIS: This is the part that gives the colour to the eye ball and has an opening in the centre. This opening is called PUPIL of the eye & is seen as the central black part.

6.RETINA: This is a very delicate layer of the eye & it lines the inside of the eye. When an image is formed on the retina it stimulates the nerve cells in the retina. This image is than transmitted to the brain by the nerve of the eye called OPTIC NERVE which is situated behind the eye.

    7. CHOROID: This is a vascular layer of the eye & it surrounds the retina. It provides nutrition to the retina.

    EYE EXAMS:

It is important to have your eyes examined at regular intervals whether you have perfect vision or not.As there are many eye diseases like glaucoma that do not give any warnings and hence could only be detected on routine eye examination.Though as a general rule the eye problems occur with more frequency witn the age, the children could undergo eye exams as early as six month of age, this becomes even more important if the one or either parent has any eye problems like very high myopia or short sightedness.

    TYPES OF EYE CARE PROFESSIONAL:

    OPTICIAN:
They are technicians trained to cut & surface glasses prescribed according to the eye exams.

    OPTOMETRIST:
They are not medical doctors, but are trained to prescribe glasses & contact lenses. As they are not qualified as medical doctors, they can not perform eye surgeries & not presribe certain eye medication.

    OPHTHALMOLOGIST OR EYE SURGEONS:
They are medical doctors & hence best qualified to do complete eye exams & treatment of eye diseases, including eye surgeries & laser tratments. They can also treat the eyes with respect to systemic conditions like diabetes & hypertension.

    EYE EXAMS & TESTS

    Clinical History:
You will be questioned by your doctor with regards to your eye problems. It is important to tell the eye specialist about any previous illness, surgery, any medications you are taking.

    Vision test:
The test measures your vision, one eye at a time, both for distance & near. Snelens chart is used for this.

    Refraction:
This test detects the degree of refractive error.Based on this you will be prescribed glasses. You will be shown different lenses with grading powers & asked to choose which one appears clearest while you are reading the chart.

    Slit lamp exam:
You will be asked to put your chin on the machine & a bright light will be focused in your eye at various angles. This test helps to detect any signs of Cataract, eye infections, corneal & contact lens problems etc.

    Tonometry:
Test to measure the eye pressure. It is the diagnostic test in diagnosing glaucoma.

    Ophthalmoscopy or Fundoscopy:
This lets doctor examine inside of the eye namely retina, optic nerve & vitreous gel. It could be done with normal size pupil or with dilated pupil.

    SPECIALISED TESTS:
Perimetry or Visual fields test-For Glaucoma

Fundus Photography:For Diabetes, Hypertension & other retinal conditions like Retinal detachment & ageing macular degeneration.
