YOUR GUIDE TO BETTER EYE CARE

COMPUTER RELATED EYE PROBLEMS (COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME)
COMPUTER EYE STRAIN

The present working environment makes it almost compulsory, the use of computers with monitors also called video display terminals or in short VDT. There have been lot of complaints of eye discomfort following the use of VDT's or computers.Extensive safety testing has established that VDT's do not emit harmful radiation. Some people do notice that black & white objects appear with a tinge of colour after viewing VDT's for an hour or more.

EYE STRAIN DUE TO VDT's or COMPUTER EYE STRAIN:

Many people notice eye strain due to VDT's such as eye irritation, red watery eyes with burning, eye fatigue tired achy eyes, heaviness of eyelids & forehead & difficulty in focusing. Also common are headaches, backaches & muscle spasms.
These problems can be overcome by proper rearrangements of work place & computer location or by providing proper glasses for the user.Your eye specialist can examine you to rule out eye disease & provide appropriate glasses if you need them.

CAN EYE STRAIN BE PREVENTED?

VDT's are placed at or slightly below eye level. Lightings should be placed so that the reflections & glares are minimised. Some times the office lighting is too bright for comfortable computer use. If its not possible to modify the offic lighting then neutral density or micro mesh filters for the monitors may help. Monitor scren is a good dust collector & should be wiped regularly with an antistatic cloth to improve visibility. The screen must be kept in proper focus. Since the scren in usually placed further away than the usual reading ditance a different set of glasses may be required for computer use. This is more relivant for those wearing Bifocals or reading glasses. A bifocal height may be need to be raised to compensate the height of the VDT.

THE ADDITIONAl VISUALL demands of VDT may mean that some individuals who normally do need glasses may need coorective lenses for this activity. You will need to describe the layout & arrangement of your office work station for the ophthalmologist to prescribe the exact lens power that will work best for you. The comprehensive eye examination you recieve from your ophthalmologist will help diagnose whether the dicomfort you experience with computer use is due to eye strain or due to unsuspected disesse in the eye.
